Geophysics is an important part of quarry investigations :
Mapping of overburden and weathered rock
Excavability assessment
Computing reserves as input in quarry planning
Estimation of physical quality of the material, determination of fractured zones or karstic areas
Positioning of weak zones related to slope stability computation
The main advantage of geophysical techniques is that the area may be covered with a dense network of profiles, showing a much more continuous image of the subsurface than scattered boreholes. These are still required for accurate depth measurement, layers identification or calibration of geophysics, but their number can be significantly reduced and their position optimised thanks to a well-designed and properly interpreted geophysical campaign.
