Pre-dredge soil investigation must provide an accurate prediction of soil characteristics and of the geometry of the subsurface. Soil quality (mud, sand, clay, etc.), as well as thickness and slope of the layers must be determined. For projects involving rock dredging, the top of rock and the thickness of the weathered bedrock are key parameters for dredgeability assessment.

Boreholes, CPTs and lab tests provide an accurate, but very local information. By first using geophysical techniques, it is possible to optimize the borehole positions, and to use them as calibration.
